BeihangUniversity (BUAA) was founded in 1952 with the merger of the aeronauticaldepartments from eight top Chinese universities. Today it is one of thenation’s foremost research universities supported by China’s Project 211,Project 985 and Project 2011.
Beihanghas an enrollment of more than 29,951 students, attending 28 schools in twocampuses in Beijing and many going on exchange in partner universities acrossEurope, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. Among the first Chinese universities tooffer postgraduate programs in English for international students, Beihangannually attracts over 1,700 foreign students from 90 countries.
Thefaculty totals over 2,300 members whose research and teaching encompassessciences, engineering, economics, management, humanities, law, philosophy,education, medicine and art. A strong body of 20accomplished professors havebeen inducted as members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the ChineseAcademy of Engineering.
Beihangoffers 189 academic programs, including 61 undergraduate programs and 128postgraduate programs. The University has been reputed for its competitive edgein such disciplines asaeronautics and astronautics, instrument science andtechnology, computer science and technology, management science andengineering, etc.
Asa powerhouse of research and innovation, Beihanghas earned 1,264 awards forachievements at national or ministerial level, including three First Prizes ofNational Science & Technology Progress Awards and six First Prizes ofNational Technological Innovation Awards. Beihangalso has strong links with theindustrial sector, whichcontributes to more than 50 percent of the University’sresearch projects.
Thecenter of Beihangis its Xueyuan Road campus in the heart of "China'sSilicon Valley" – Zhongguancun Science Park. The Park is one of thetechnology centres in the world and is growing fast into a high and new-techindustrial cluster. In addition to its Xueyuan Road Campus, the University isalso located in northwest Beijing’s Changping District with a newly developedcampus and has comprehensive research facilities, notably the NationalLaboratory of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NLAA).
Beihanghas also grown to be a university of global outreach, with a recentlyinaugurated Europe Office in Brussels and visibility in several globalconsortia, including Top Industrial Managers for Europe (T.I.M.E). TheUniversity maintains partnerships with 185 universities, research institutionsand companies in over 30 countries. The cooperation covers faculty and studentexchanges, joint workshops and publications, joint research endeavors andinternational educational projects. The Sino-French Engineer School (or, EcoleCentrale de Pekin), established by Beihang and the Groupe des Ecoles Centralesin 2005, has won international recognition for its excellence in internationalengineering education. Beihangis also home to the U.N. Regional Center forSpace Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (China)established in November 2014.
